Any Gaggia Classic owner who wants to PID their espresso machine has questions about the difficulty of installation and the level of tech knowledge required.

As the wires are precut to the required length and come with connectors, there’s no wire cutting or soldering involved.

If you have a basic understanding of your coffee machine, electronics, and safety – and can use the basic tools you probably already have – you should be able to complete the PID installation on your own.

Works on:

RI9380 – 120V, US Gaggia Classic Pro ( for example model RI9380/46 or other RI9380 xx coffee machines)

Usually these machines are made starting with year 2018.

It’s possible that you have on the label from the bottom,a month and year written ( for example 21/2018 – meaning week 21, year 2018).

Not suitable for older machines, made before 2018.

This PID kit does not offer any dimmer possibilities.

The video shows my own experience with my machine and my own installation process.

I have experience with coffee machines for years and understand the basics of it’s functions.

I also understand what it means to screw up and not be careful with a machine that runs with hot water and high pressure and has inside an electrical system.

Low to medium info and understanding of your coffee machine is a must !

Especially when it comes to wire colors and the way they work inside the coffee machine.

GENERAL INSTALLATION IDEAS OR RULES:

1. Never leave wires touching directly the boiler body (as it has a high working temperature) or any other hot element, parts with sharp edges, like the back vents of the Gaggia case but not just those.
2. Make sure no wire is touching directly the case of the coffee machine or electrical shock and death could occure during use.

Isolate with electrical tape ANY wire or connector that could lead to electrical contact with another component or part of your machine.

3. As a general rule, the longer wires with bare ends usually go to the PID controller terminals, while the fork ends usually connect to the SSR’s.
4. Flat ends usually connect to the wires that were removed from the thermostats (BREW or STEAM thermostat).
5. Shorter cables (like 10-15cm long) usually connect two elements inside the machine while the longer cables (like 20-30cm long) usually connect an inside element and the PID controller terminals.
6. Disconnect the PID terminal 3 or 4 BEFORE setting it up. Connect it back after the PID controller setup is done.
7. This installation tutorial is useful for the Top Cover users.
8. Use this opportunity to install all other upgrades and mods, like the pressure gauge, 9 bar spring, dimmer mod and so on, since you will have the case opened.
9. There are wire color differences between EU / UK and US machines.

In this video tutorial, I used an EU/UK machine.

Differences might be with the power cables that I use in my video to power up the controller.

The back power connector wire might be black and not blue, as in my tutorial.

Main front switch cable might be white, instead of orange color like mine is.

Also, in US, you need to check which white wire is the correct one, as sometimes these are randomly inserted in the back of the switch. One white wire is above and one under it, on same line.

Try each white wire and check which one makes your PID controller power on and off with the switch and does NOT stay ALWAYS ON.

One white wire will make the controller be always on while the other one (the correct one) powers the PID controller only when you press the switch button.

10. Pay great attention to usage of the terminals 1 and 2 of the PID controller, the ones that we use to power on the unit.

If in any case you mistakenly use other terminals to connect the two power cables, that might damage the unit entirely and make it unusable.

11. Arrange the installed components inside the coffee machine case in such a way that they do not interfere with other components or wires / elements and do not make electrical contact with other wires or metal components.
12. Use the black rubber grommets on the rear vent hole if you need to get the installed wires OUTSIDE the coffee machine case (PID controller Aluminium case users)

That will ensure the wires will not get cut / sectioned, creating electrical contact between the cable and machine case. This could cause electrical shock and death.

13. I decided just to tilt the boiler and not to remove it entirely from the coffee machine case, during BREW thermostat removable and use of the PT100 temperature sensor.

Some users removed the boiler completely.

In any case, idea behind this is to get access to the BREW thermostat and work easily while removing it and replacing it with the PT100 temperature sensor.

14. Use hand tight force first, during removable or assembly process. That will ensure you do not cross threads or damage the PT100 sensor or any other bolts or components.

Never use wrenches and pliers, unless you know exactly what you are doing and how not to damage a soft thread or material.

15. Make sure BEFORE powering on the machine that you DO NOT HAVE ANY LEAK inside the machine.

Water and electronics DO NOT WORK TOGETHER and water could and will damage your entire electrical system.
